At least 25 killed as floods and landslides hit northern India

What the report says
Al Jazeera, citing AFP and Reuters, reported that at least 25 people have died after days of intense monsoon rain caused floods and landslides in northern and northeastern India. Local officials said the deadly incidents occurred over the weekend in Indian-administered Kashmir and in Nagaland, with the toll still developing as search and relief efforts continued on Monday, July 20, 2026.
In Kashmir, a senior police official said rain-linked incidents in Poonch, Rajouri and Doda districts killed at least 15 people, while others were missing. In Nagaland, officials reported nine deaths from several landslides caused by sustained rainfall. Wennyei Konyak, magistrate of Nagaland’s Mon district, told AFP that rescuers had found four of eight bodies and that at least 15 people were injured.
The report said a flash flood in Rajouri, in the Jammu region, damaged public and private property and disrupted residents’ lives, according to a statement from the office of Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. Army personnel and state emergency responders rescued 11 people, including five children. In neighbouring Assam, the state disaster management authority reported one flood-related death on Sunday and said more than 57,000 people in seven districts had been affected.
India’s weather office warned that Jammu and Kashmir could see more extremely heavy rain in the coming days, with active monsoon conditions expected to continue across the region for as long as a week. Authorities also temporarily suspended the Amarnath and Vaishno Devi pilgrimages, citing safety concerns until routes are cleared. Seasonal monsoon flooding and related accidents recur in India, even as some areas also face water shortages and drought.
