At least 11 killed in Ukrainian and Russian strikes as holiday camp hit

Al Jazeera, citing AFP, AP and Reuters, reported that at least 11 people were killed in a new round of Russian and Ukrainian drone strikes, with deaths recorded on both sides of the front. The deadliest reported incident was in Kyrylivka, a seaside village on the Azov Sea in a Russian-held part of Ukraine’s Zaporizhia region, where Moscow-installed regional governor Yevgeny Balitsky said a suspected Ukrainian strike hit holiday camps overnight Friday, killing at least eight people, including two children.

Balitsky said 14 others, among them three children, were wounded and accused Ukraine of intentionally attacking civilians. Al Jazeera reported that Ukraine had not immediately commented on the Kyrylivka strike. The village was captured by Russian forces early in Moscow’s full-scale invasion, which began in February 2022.

In Ukraine’s northern Sumy region, regional military administration head Oleh Hryhorov said a Russian drone hit a civilian facility and caused a major fire. He said three drivers working for the private Ukrainian delivery company Nova Poshta were killed. The attacks followed a warning from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy late Friday that intelligence indicated Russia might be preparing a major attack.

The report also said Romania’s defence ministry announced it had shot down a drone that entered its airspace near the Ukrainian border, with President Nicusor Dan saying an F-16 pilot carried out the interception. Al Jazeera noted that drone incidents have repeatedly affected Romania and other NATO members during the war. The latest strikes add to a summer rise in civilian casualties, even as both Russia and Ukraine deny targeting civilians.
