At least 109 dead, over 100 missing as migrant boat capsizes off Djibouti

What the report says
At least 109 people have died and more than 116 remain missing after a migrant boat capsized off Djibouti, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), as reported by Al Jazeera. The vessel was carrying more than 300 people and overturned near Guhere, off Djibouti’s eastern coast facing the Gulf of Aden and the Bab al-Mandeb strait. The incident took place from Thursday night into before dawn on Friday, based on survivor accounts cited by the UN agency.
Al Jazeera reported that more than 80 people survived the shipwreck, and all of them were Ethiopian. The dead included 15 children, according to the IOM. Djiboutian search and rescue operations were continuing when the report was published, with emergency support also being provided by IOM teams and local authorities.
The route across the Bab al-Mandeb is a well-known but dangerous migration corridor between the Horn of Africa and Yemen. Migrants often use it to seek work or safety in Gulf countries, even as regional instability adds to the risks. Al Jazeera also cited IOM data showing more than 20,000 incoming movements to Djibouti from Ethiopia since September 10, and said the agency recorded at least 900 dead or missing on this route last year.
