At 61, Lumala sends warning to Uganda’s rally young guns

What the report says
The Observer reported that veteran Ugandan rally driver Moses Lumala, 61, made another strong statement in the 2026 KCB National Rally Championship by finishing second in the fourth round, the KCB EMC Soroti/Katakwi Rally. Lumala, a former national champion in 1999 and 2003, is competing after a 23-year break and says he is still adapting to his Ford Fiesta Proto.
According to the report, Lumala finished 14.3 seconds behind championship leader Hassan Alwi, who won the event in 1:13:17.4. Jonas Kansiime took third place. Lumala has now been runner-up to Alwi twice this season, after also placing second in the opening round in Mbale. He retired from the Pearl of Africa Rally in May and came sixth in the Greater Masaka round in June.
The Observer said Lumala has been particularly competitive on individual stages, winning three in Mbale and five more in Soroti/Katakwi, including the Power Stage. Other stage wins in the latest event were shared among Alwi, Kansiime, Musa Ssegabwe and Ronald Ssebuguzi. Ssegabwe, described as a pre-event favourite, exited after going off the road into a swamp during SS4.
Alwi’s victory strengthened his lead in the national title race, with the report placing him above 180 points after four rounds and four rounds still to go. The event hosts, Eastern Motor Club, also held a community cleaning activity at Soroti Sports Ground. The championship is next scheduled to head west for the KCB UMC Fort Portal/Kasese Rally from September 4-6, 2026.
