Assailants Attack Prison Officers, Escape with Two Guns in Kyegegwa

Three prison officers were injured when armed assailants tried to force entry into Kyegegwa Government Prison in western Uganda and fled with two guns and 60 rounds of ammunition, according to the Uganda Prisons Service, as reported by Nile Post. The incident happened around 1 a.m. on August 14, 2026, during the night shift, when the attackers reportedly overpowered the sentries guarding the facility.

Uganda Prisons Service spokesperson Frank Baine said the stolen firearms were a Uganda Prisons Service gun and a Uganda Police gun, each loaded with 30 rounds. The injured officers were identified by the service as Sergeant Warder Kalisa Titus, Sergeant Wardress Nakuya Suzan Margret and Warder Odongo Joshua. They were taken to Kyegegwa General Hospital for treatment.

The service said no inmates escaped during the attack. It added that other security agencies were called in immediately, the prison was secured and a search operation was launched to recover the weapons and find those responsible. Investigations are ongoing.

The attack highlights continuing security concerns around prisons and other guarded government installations. Uganda Prisons Service has asked anyone with information that could help identify the assailants or recover the guns to contact authorities or use its toll-free line.
