As the S&P 500 sells off, traders eye key 'risk pivot' level - CNBC

What the report says
CNBC reported that options traders are watching key S&P 500 levels for signs that the recent stock-market pullback could become more volatile. The pressure comes as crude oil rises, bonds weaken and the 10-year Treasury yield reaches 4.7%, described by CNBC as its highest level since January 2025. Investors have also sold major technology shares following earnings, although the S&P 500 remains less than 3% below its record and above last month’s lows.
According to CNBC’s analysis of data from SpotGamma, Barchart and Cboe LiveVol, options positioning had helped keep the index contained in a relatively narrow range since mid-May. Market makers appeared to have been “long gamma,” a setup in which their hedging can dampen swings by buying stocks during declines and selling during rallies. The report said the largest positioning was clustered near the 7,500 level in the S&P 500.
The concern is that if the index moves below important levels, dealers’ hedging could shift from stabilizing the market to amplifying selling. CNBC cited Barchart’s model as putting the gamma “flip” point at 7,500, while a break below 740 in the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust, where dealer gamma exposure is concentrated, could increase sell-off risk. Barchart’s Brendan Herbert told CNBC the market is in a negative-gamma regime, meaning further declines could force market makers to sell.
SpotGamma founder Brent Kochuba separately said positive gamma had diminished but still extended lightly toward 7,300, while noting the S&P 500 had moved below a “risk pivot.” The levels matter because options hedging can influence short-term market liquidity and volatility.
