NBC News reports that officials in Madison, Wisconsin, have identified Corey Ruiz as the man fatally shot by a police officer on Wednesday, as protests and calls for accountability intensified in the city. Police said Ruiz, who was in his 30s, was shot during a struggle involving four officers after he produced a fixed-blade knife and injured an officer. Madison Police Chief John Patterson described the case as an open homicide investigation, while the Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Criminal Investigation Division is leading the independent review.

According to NBC, police said officers initially responded to the Marquette neighborhood after reports of a person stealing bicycles and checking vehicle doors. Authorities said Ruiz fled on a bicycle, was later stopped near South Baldwin and Williamson streets, and either fell or was pulled from the bike before the confrontation. Police said a stun gun did not work, and the injured officer then fired. Ruiz was later pronounced dead at a hospital. None of the four officers was wearing a body camera, but bystander videos circulated widely online.

Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway said the shooting must be rigorously investigated and stressed that no one should die from an encounter with law enforcement. NBC reported that the officer who fired has not been publicly named and that the officers involved will be placed on administrative leave under state law.

Community organizer Jazzman Brown described Ruiz as a father and longtime Madison resident who had faced homelessness and mental health struggles. Hundreds gathered near the shooting scene Thursday, in an area close to prior Madison police killings, underscoring renewed local anger over police use of force.
