What the report says

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has commented on the club’s decision to cut 60 jobs, saying he was told the move was aimed at helping Arsenal achieve the success it wants to create. BBC Sport reported that chief executive Richard Garlick informed staff this week that the workforce would be reduced across several departments, affecting up to 7% of the club’s 871 permanent employees.

According to the report, the redundancies will not affect coaching or performance staff in the men’s or women’s teams. Roles connected to the Arsenal Foundation, Arsenal in the Community and security staff are also said to be exempt. The review behind the restructuring had already been under way before Arsenal won the Premier League, BBC Sport said.

Arteta’s remarks came ahead of Arsenal’s league match at Nottingham Forest. He said the club had explained that the changes were part of a wider analysis intended to improve operations, keep investing and put people in the right roles. He declined to go into further detail, saying the issue was not one for him to answer.

The developments come a week after Arteta signed a new four-year contract. BBC Sport also noted that Arsenal recently reported record revenues for the 2024-25 financial year, while still posting a small overall loss and higher operating costs.
