Arsenal sign Konsa from Villa as Premier League holders bolster defence

What the report says
Arsenal have signed England defender Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa in a reported £51m deal, according to Al Jazeera’s AFP-based report published on 21 August 2026. The move was completed on a long-term contract shortly before Arsenal began their Premier League title defence against Coventry, and it comes as the club looks to strengthen its back line for another push for domestic honours.
Konsa, 28, is expected to add depth and flexibility to Mikel Arteta’s squad. Al Jazeera reported that Arsenal view him as capable of playing both central defence and right-back, which could be important with William Saliba unavailable for several months because of a back problem and Jurrien Timber also dealing with fitness concerns. Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta described Konsa as a high-quality defender with athleticism and composure.
The report said Konsa had a strong spell at Villa after joining from Brentford in 2019, making close to 300 appearances and helping the club win the Europa League last season. He also featured regularly for England at the 2026 World Cup. His move followed earlier discussions with Arsenal players he knows from the England setup, including Noni Madueke, Eberechi Eze, Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka.
For Arsenal, the signing is part of a broader recruitment drive after their first English title in 22 years. Villa, meanwhile, have already seen several notable departures this summer, adding to the significance of losing a long-serving defender.
