Police in Jackson, Mississippi, have made an arrest in the death of Tasia Fortune, a Black woman whose body was found in August in the lot of an abandoned home. According to BBC World News, investigators said the case is being treated as a homicide and that more arrests could follow as they continue to review evidence.

Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney said the arrest was an important step but not the end of the inquiry. She said investigators had interviewed 15 people and that a suspect would be charged with murder, pending the case moving forward. The medical examiner’s finding that Fortune’s death was homicide is central to the investigation. Police had only recently announced they were examining the death as a possible killing.

The case has drawn close attention in Jackson, a majority-Black city in Mississippi, because of the state’s history of racial violence and lynching. Fortune’s mother, Christy Spivey, told the BBC that the arrest brought some relief, while also saying she hoped police had the right person. She had previously raised concerns about limited communication from officials during the early stages of the investigation.

Separately, the BBC reported that some members of Congress have pointed to Fortune’s death as part of wider concern over suspicious hangings of Black people in the US. That broader debate is ongoing, but the circumstances of Fortune’s death remain under active investigation.
