Around 12,000 people evacuated in France fires

The evacuations were reported in the Gironde area, where regional authorities said more than 2,000 hectares of land had burned. French media said the situation follows the deaths of two firefighters earlier in the week near Bordeaux airport, while no injuries were reported in the French fires on Thursday.

Local authorities in Gironde have imposed restrictions aimed at reducing fire risk, including bans on internal combustion and electric engines in largely forested zones, along with several road closures. The region remains under a red alert, and some leisure sites in vulnerable forest areas were due to close on Thursday afternoon and evening. AFP, cited by the BBC, reported that roughly 10,000 of those evacuated were tourists.

The BBC also reported a third firefighter death in Europe, in Italy. Italian officials paid tribute to Alessandro Marchi, who died while fighting a wildfire in San Cataldo, Sicily. Sicily’s civil protection chief said Wednesday that the island had recorded more than 350 fires, including ten major incidents that prompted precautionary evacuations, and said the fires had human causes.

The fires come during a period of unusually severe heat across Europe. The BBC noted that Madrid has also faced wildfires, though most evacuated residents there were allowed to return home overnight except in one area of Villa del Prado. As broader context, European climate monitors have warned that the continent is warming rapidly, conditions that can worsen wildfire risk when combined with dry vegetation and high temperatures.
