Armed attackers kill Securico guard, steal rifle in Mubende coffee store raid

Nile Post reports that police in Mubende District are searching for unidentified armed attackers after a private security guard was killed during a pre-dawn raid on a coffee storage facility in Kalonga Sub-county. The incident occurred at about 5:00am on July 25, 2026, at Artica Coffee International Stores in Kagavu LC1, Budibaga Parish, where 40-year-old Mutegule Joseph was on duty.

According to the report, Mutegule, an employee of Uganda Securico Company Limited who had worked as a guard for 15 years, was attacked in his room, beaten and dragged roughly 200 metres into a nearby bush. He was found unconscious and died while being taken for medical care. The assailants allegedly took his rifle, identified by police as serial number UG 30373337E104297, and three rounds of ammunition.

Wamala Region Police spokesperson SSP Lameck Kigozi said officers documented the scene, gathered evidence and recorded witness statements. The matter was first reported at Kalonga Sub-county Police Station before being referred to Mubende District Police Headquarters. A canine unit was deployed, but police said tracking was unsuccessful because the scene had been disturbed before investigators arrived. The body was taken to Mubende Regional Hospital for a postmortem.

Police say the investigation covers murder and aggravated robbery, with the Regional Flying Squad Unit involved in efforts to identify the attackers and recover the weapon. Kigozi also urged private security firms to reconsider assigning a single guard to high-risk premises, warning that lone deployments can leave both personnel and property more vulnerable. Residents have been asked to remain alert and share any useful information with authorities.
