Armed attackers kill more than 20 in northwest Nigeria - Al Jazeera

What the report says
Al Jazeera, citing AFP and other agencies, reported that at least 20 people were killed when armed gang members attacked communities in Zamfara State in northwestern Nigeria. The violence was reported on Wednesday in the Sauna district of the Talata Mafara local government area. Nasiru Lauwali, identified as the district’s representative, told AFP that a large group of bandits entered the communities between about 3pm and 4pm local time and attacked people they encountered.
The report places the Zamfara killings within a broader rise in insecurity across northwest and central Nigeria, where armed groups commonly described locally as bandits have carried out raids on villages. Al Jazeera reported that such groups are accused of stealing livestock and abducting residents for ransom, a pattern that has become a major security concern for communities and authorities.
The article also noted separate recent security operations elsewhere in Nigeria. In Kwara State, The Punch reported that security forces killed at least three suspected bandits late on Tuesday and rescued a businessman, Tuhkur Sanni. Earlier in July, dozens of students and teachers were freed after being held for 56 days following abductions from three schools in Oyo State, according to the account cited by Al Jazeera.
The violence matters because kidnapping for ransom and rural raids have compounded Nigeria’s wider security crisis, including instability linked to the Boko Haram insurgency in the northeast. Al Jazeera cited SBM Intelligence as saying attackers received more than $1.6m in ransom payments in 2024.
