Armed attackers kill more than 20 in northwest Nigeria

The violence took place in the Talata Mafara local government area, where Nasiru Lauwali, a representative of Sauna district, told AFP that a large group of attackers entered communities on Wednesday afternoon and struck people they encountered.

The reported killings come during a broader rise in attacks across northwest and central Nigeria, where armed groups often described locally as bandits have repeatedly targeted rural settlements. In Kwara State, The Punch reported that security forces killed at least three suspected bandits late Tuesday and rescued businessman Tuhkur Sanni. Earlier in July, dozens of students and teachers were freed after being held for 56 days following abductions from three schools in Oyo State, according to the account cited by Al Jazeera.

Nigeria’s kidnapping crisis has been shaped by criminal gangs, ransom economies and wider instability linked in part to the Boko Haram insurgency in the northeast. Al Jazeera cited SBM Intelligence as saying attackers received more than $1.6 million in ransom payments in 2024. The latest Zamfara attack underscores the continuing strain on security forces and the risks facing rural communities.
