AZCentral and The Arizona Republic reported that Arizona health officials have confirmed the state’s first known case of Clade I mpox, a strain associated with more severe illness and higher death rates than the Clade II strain that has circulated in the United States since 2022. The Arizona Department of Health Services said the patient had recently traveled internationally and acquired the infection outside the U.S.

The state did not release the person’s age, gender, county of residence or hospitalization status, citing privacy, and did not identify whether the case involved subclade Ia or Ib. Health officials said the risk to the general public remains low and that there is no evidence Clade I mpox is spreading in Arizona. The CDC has similarly described the risk from the Clade I outbreak as low for most people, with low-to-moderate risk for men who have sex with men.

According to figures cited in the report, federal officials had recorded at least 20 Clade I cases in the U.S. as of June 2026, with cases becoming more frequent beginning in March. State data showed 34 total mpox cases reported in Arizona as of July 21, including 32 in Maricopa County, one in Cochise County and one in Yavapai County.

Mpox can cause painful rashes, sores or blisters, swollen lymph nodes and flu-like symptoms, and it usually spreads through close skin-to-skin contact or contact with contaminated personal items. State and federal guidance cited by the report recommends testing, vaccination with JYNNEOS for eligible people, isolation for those with symptoms, and avoiding close physical contact when unexplained rashes or sores are present.
