Archbishop Wokorach Hails Lt Gen. Otema’s Homecoming As Symbol Of Peace

Archbishop of Gulu Archdiocese Raphael P’mony Wokorach has praised the return of retired Lieutenant General Charles Otema Awany to his community in Gulu, describing it as a sign of the peace now felt in northern Uganda. The remarks were made at a thanksgiving ceremony at Kaunda Grounds in Gulu City on August 28, where Otema was welcomed home after 47 years of military service.

According to Watchdog Uganda, the archbishop framed the homecoming as a moment of gratitude after years marked by conflict and military duty. He urged people in the region to protect the peace achieved over time and use it as a base for social and economic progress. He also commended President Yoweri Museveni for efforts aimed at pacifying the area.

Government and military representatives at the event echoed similar themes. Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Okello Oryem, speaking for the president, congratulated Otema and recognized his service during difficult years in northern Uganda. Trade minister Gen Wilson Mbadi said Otema’s career reflected the wider stabilization of northern Uganda and West Nile, while also noting the need for younger officers to take on more leadership.

Otema, who once held senior UPDF roles including Commander of the Reserve Force and Chief of Logistics and Engineering, said the ceremony was an emotional homecoming and that he now plans to focus on farming, livestock, hospitality and other forms of community development.
