What the report says

MacRumors reported that Apple is testing an iPhone display of about 6.96 inches, a size that would probably be presented commercially as a 7-inch screen if it ever ships. The report, published July 21, cites Chinese leaker Digital Chat Station, who said Apple is evaluating the panel internally for a 20th anniversary iPhone expected next year.

According to the MacRumors account, the prototype display keeps the same aspect ratio as the current iPhone 17 Pro Max. However, the report says it is not yet clear whether Apple will use the panel in an eventual iPhone 20 Pro Max. MacRumors also noted that Bloomberg previously reported Apple had intensified work on two sizes of the anniversary model.

The display rumor adds to earlier claims that Apple is exploring a more dramatic redesign for the commemorative iPhone, including a near edge-to-edge look with curved glass around the sides. MacRumors said the forthcoming iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are still expected to match the current Pro dimensions, with 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch displays.

For context, MacRumors said Apple last enlarged its premium iPhone screens with the iPhone 16 Pro generation in 2024, when the Pro model moved from 6.1 to 6.3 inches and the Pro Max from 6.7 to 6.9 inches. The latest report is described as the first indication of a possible display-size increase for Apple’s 2027 anniversary iPhone, but it remains a prototype-stage rumor rather than a confirmed product plan.
