Apple is now the second major US technology company to adopt the Trump-backed naming change, after Google said over the weekend that it would do the same for US users.

Al Jazeera reported that the move is tied to a Trump executive order that changes the name in the US Geographic Names Information System, a federal reference that many mapping services use. While the order does not force private companies to alter their own labels, administration officials have suggested Trump personally pressed companies to comply. US Interior Secretary Doug Burgum told Fox News that Trump contacted Apple directly about the request, according to the report.

The article also said Apple has previously followed other Trump-era naming changes, including the Gulf of Mexico and Denali. Apple did not immediately comment. Google said it uses official government sources, while some other map services, such as MapQuest, have rejected the change.
