TechCrunch reports that Anthropic is updating Claude’s voice mode to make it more useful for complex tasks, following recent voice-related updates from rival OpenAI. The company said Thursday that Claude users can now choose among the Opus, Sonnet and Haiku models for voice interactions. The voice feature, introduced last year, had previously been powered by Haiku, which TechCrunch describes as quick but less suited to heavier work.

Under the update, Claude’s voice mode will default to the fastest version of the model a user most recently selected in text chat. Anthropic says the feature is intended to support longer conversations, such as practicing a client pitch, getting feedback on communication style or brainstorming product market research.

A major change is that Claude’s voice mode can connect with third-party apps including Gmail, Google Calendar, Slack, Canva and Notion. According to TechCrunch, that means users could ask Claude by voice to move a meeting, prepare an email draft or create a Notion document. The article contrasts this with OpenAI’s voice mode, saying ChatGPT’s recent voice update improved conversational style but does not yet use external tools in the same way.

TechCrunch also reports that Anthropic earlier added beta multilingual support for Claude voice mode, with users needing to manually choose the language. Supported languages include English, French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Brazilian Portuguese and Spanish variants. The updated voice mode is available in beta across platforms, though free users are limited to Haiku and one connected app. Anthropic did not announce changes to the underlying voice model or describe its voice technology stack.
