Anthropic’s Amodei defends open-weight stance following critique from Palantir’s Karp - Fox Business

What the report says
Fox Business reported that Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei rejected suggestions that his company supports prohibiting open-weight artificial intelligence models, responding after Anthropic did not join a letter backed by several major AI companies. The letter, signed by firms including Nvidia and Palantir, was tied to the Open Secure AI Alliance, an effort to promote and share open technologies intended to improve security as AI risks emerge from both open and closed systems.
In a post on Anthropic’s website, Amodei said the company has not called for a category-wide ban on open-weight models. He said some models without dangerous capabilities can serve the public by supporting businesses, developers and researchers at relatively low operating cost. However, he disputed the idea that broader model access inherently benefits defenders more than attackers, saying he sees a plausible risk that the reverse could occur, including in areas such as biological threats.
Amodei said Anthropic’s preferred approach is not a ban but tighter controls around advanced chips, prevention of large-scale model distillation and safety testing requirements for highly capable models, whether open or closed. He also said he agreed with parts of the open letter, including the role open weights can play in expanding economic access, competition and customer control.
The dispute followed comments by Palantir CEO Alex Karp on Fox Business Network’s “The Claman Countdown.” Karp, whose company signed the open-weight letter, argued that the U.S. should avoid a restrictive path similar to Europe’s and said open-weight systems are important for maintaining competition and performance, including in government AI platforms built with American technology.
