TechCrunch reported that Anthropic released Opus 5 on Friday, positioning it as the latest version of the company’s higher-end Opus model line. According to the report, Opus 5 is smaller than Fable 5 but is expected to cost less and face fewer usage limits, making it a more practical choice for many customers. TechCrunch said Anthropic’s launch materials showed Opus 5 beating Fable 5 on several benchmarks, despite Fable being described as the larger model.

The launch comes shortly after other updates in Anthropic’s model family. TechCrunch noted that Opus 4.8 became available on May 28, while Mythos 5, Fable 5 and Sonnet 5 were released in June. That leaves Haiku, Anthropic’s lightweight model, as the remaining product line awaiting a 5-series upgrade, based on the article.

Anthropic’s announcement emphasized stronger self-checking and iterative problem-solving, TechCrunch reported, including an example in which Opus 5 produced a computer vision pipeline from an incomplete prompt. The report also said Opus 5 is not covered by the 30-day data retention policy that applies to Fable and Mythos, an issue that had drawn concern from some privacy-focused users.

The model still includes safeguards, especially for cybersecurity-related requests. TechCrunch said Opus 5 blocks some activities such as vulnerability scanning of software binaries, while allowing source-code vulnerability review because Anthropic views that as more likely to support defensive work. The company also introduced a beta feature, Automatic Fallbacks, that can send blocked API prompts to a less powerful model so users receive a response rather than an error.
