The Independent Uganda reported that proceedings in Uganda v Molly Katanga and Others continued in the High Court on July 20, 2026, with a British DNA forensics expert appearing as the fourth defence witness. According to court notes adapted by the publication from Anthony Natif’s posts on X, the witness completed her testimony after several days of questioning by both defence and prosecution lawyers.

The central issue covered was whether DNA material found on the firearm could identify who fired the shot that killed businessman Henry Katanga. The Independent reported that the defence expert told Justice Rosette Kania that, even if collection and laboratory work had been flawless, the DNA findings would not determine the shooter. The report says she also agreed with an earlier position attributed to the prosecution’s forensic witness, Police Director of Forensic Services Mubiru, that DNA evidence could not answer that specific question.

The publication said the defence witness criticised the state DNA process as contaminated and of limited value for determining the act of firing the weapon. Defence lawyer Elison Karuhanga led re-examination, while Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Samali Wakooli objected to parts of the evidence, saying the prosecution expert had dealt with source-level analysis.

The evidence matters because prosecutors had previously relied on the reported presence and dominance of Molly Katanga’s DNA on parts of the gun to support their case at the “no case to answer” stage, according to The Independent. The latest testimony, as reported, narrows the probative value of that DNA evidence while leaving the ultimate findings to the trial court.
