Anita Among Thanks Museveni for Pardon, Mercy After House Arrest

Former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among has publicly thanked President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni after he reportedly ordered her release from house arrest and decided not to pursue criminal charges. In a message posted on X on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, Among said she was grateful for the president’s mercy and for the chance to regain her freedom after more than three months under restricted movement, according to Watchdog Uganda.

The outlet reported that Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defence Forces, announced a day earlier that Museveni had instructed him to release Among and that the State would not prosecute her. Among also expressed appreciation to Muhoozi for how he handled the matter, while saying she was thankful to God for life and freedom.

Among, who represents Bukedea District as Woman MP, said she was ready to return to serving her constituents and continue working with Uganda’s leadership. Watchdog Uganda said her house arrest followed searches at several properties linked to her in Nakasero, Kigo, Ntinda and Bukedea. The reported investigation involved allegations of corruption, illicit enrichment, abuse of office and other financial irregularities tied to her time as Speaker. Her release appears to close a politically significant case that had drawn attention from leaders in the Teso sub-region and others who had urged mercy and access to medical care.
