Angola: Environmental Assessment of Lobito Corridor Master Plan Receives Public Input

Public consultation on the Strategic Environmental Assessment for Angola’s Lobito Corridor Master Plan drew input in Huambo from academics, civil society groups, non-governmental organisations and public officials, according to ANGOP via AllAfrica. The session is part of a wider consultation process intended to inform planning for communities, businesses and institutions along the corridor. It is being organised by the Diversifica Mais Project Implementation Unit with the Angolan Regulatory Agency for Cargo and Logistics Certification (ARCCLA).

The article says the consultation covers five provinces along the corridor: Benguela, Bié, Huambo, Moxico and Moxico Leste. Meetings have already been held in Moxico Leste, Moxico and Huambo, with further sessions planned for Bié and Benguela later in the week. The process presented long-term planning tools, territorial and logistics development goals, and the main findings of the environmental assessment, including opportunities, challenges and recommendations.

Huambo’s vice-governor, Angelino Elavoco, described the exercise as part of the government’s approach to sustainable development and said the corridor should support a more integrated and environmentally responsible model. He also highlighted Huambo’s role as a strategic hub between Angola’s coast and inland regions. Separately, the report notes that the Master Plan is a government initiative financed by the World Bank and aims to support economic diversification, private investment and job creation along the corridor.
