What the report says

NBCSports.com’s Pro Football Talk reported that Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been medically cleared for full participation as training camp opens, according to head coach Andy Reid. Reid said at a Friday press conference that Mahomes can take part in all practice periods, meaning he is not expected to begin camp on the physically unable to perform list.

The report said Mahomes tore his ACL in December but has been at the team facility regularly during his rehabilitation. Reid indicated the quarterback will receive his usual early-camp workload, while coaches, trainers and doctors continue to monitor him. Chiefs quarterbacks and rookies reported Friday, giving Mahomes and the other quarterbacks additional ramp-up time before the rest of the roster reports July 28.

Reid did not commit to Mahomes being ready for Week 1, saying the team would evaluate his progress day by day before making decisions about games. He described both himself and Mahomes as optimistic, but emphasized that Kansas City is not making predictions at this stage.

The development is significant because Mahomes’ health is central to the Chiefs’ offensive plans and broader expectations for the season. Full practice clearance is an encouraging step in his recovery, but the team’s public stance remains cautious as it assesses how his knee responds to training camp work.
