Anduril Brings The Thunder With Autonomous Tiltrotor Attack Drone Concept - TWZ

TWZ reported that Anduril has unveiled Thunder, a hybrid-electric tiltrotor combat drone developed with Archer Aviation, timed around the Farnborough International Airshow in the United Kingdom. The company presented the aircraft as an autonomous, uncrewed “wingman” concept intended to operate alongside crewed rotorcraft such as the AH-64 Apache attack helicopter and the future MV-75 Cheyenne II tiltrotor, flying fast and low into contested areas while keeping human crews farther from danger.

According to the report, Anduril describes Thunder as a Group 5 uncrewed aircraft, a U.S. classification covering the largest drone category. The design uses two tilting rotors on a high wing, a V-tail and a series hybrid-electric powertrain. TWZ said a mockup will be shown at Farnborough and that Anduril is targeting a first flight next year, with production possible before the end of the decade if customers materialize. The company said it has worked with unnamed government customers but did not identify them.

The concept is meant to address threats facing attack helicopters and other low-flying aircraft, including air defenses and hostile drones. Thunder is being designed to scout ahead, help find time-sensitive targets, carry modular payloads and provide close protection for friendly aircraft. TWZ reported that Anduril says the aircraft should broadly match the speed and range profile of the MV-75 and be transportable in a standard 40-foot shipping container after some disassembly.
