Android Auto is finally getting the Google Maps feature drivers have wanted - Android Central

Android Central reports that Google Maps is beginning to add a live speedometer to Android Auto, addressing a feature gap that users have noted for years. The feature has long been available in Google Maps on Android phones, and Android Central says it also appeared on Apple CarPlay in 2024 before reaching Google’s own in-car Android platform.

According to the report, the release appears to be narrow at this stage. Android Central cites Reddit user reports, via 9to5Google, indicating that some Google Maps beta users on version 26.29.02.946673643 have seen the feature, including at least one user in Canada. The article says the rollout appears to be controlled server-side, meaning installing the latest app version may not be enough for most drivers to see it immediately.

The speedometer is shown near the posted speed limit display when speed-limit data is available. Community reports cited by Android Central say the displayed speed can change color when the driver goes above the listed limit, offering a quicker visual cue while navigating. The article also notes that Google treats the in-app speed reading as a reference tool, not a replacement for a vehicle’s built-in speedometer.

The change matters because Android Auto has trailed comparable Google Maps experiences despite sharing much of the same navigation foundation.
