An FDA Panel Just Endorsed These Unproven Peptides - WIRED

Wired reports that an FDA advisory committee on Thursday narrowly backed moving several popular but unapproved peptides closer to legal compounding, despite agency scientists advising against the step. After an 11-hour meeting, the outside panel voted 8-6, with one abstention, to recommend adding BPC-157, KPV and TB-500 to the FDA’s bulks list, which would let certain compounding pharmacies prepare them for patients. A fourth peptide, MOTs-C, also received majority support in a 7-5 vote with two abstentions.

The meeting centered on peptides including BPC-157 and TB-500, which are promoted by wellness figures and appear together in the so-called “Wolverine stack” associated with injury recovery claims. Wired notes that podcasters, influencers and Health and Human Services secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. have helped raise interest in peptide therapies, even though many claimed uses—such as tissue repair, gut health and rejuvenation—lack strong clinical evidence.

FDA staff presented concerns that the seven peptides under review have not been shown to be safe and effective. Supporters, including clinicians, patients and compounding interests, argued that allowing regulated pharmacies to make the products could reduce reliance on online gray-market sources labeled for research use. Critics warned that adding them to the bulks list could be mistaken by patients as FDA approval, and several opposing committee members cited safety unknowns and limited data.

The recommendation is not final. Wired reports the FDA is expected to take months before making a formal decision, and the panel was due to consider three additional peptides on Friday.
