What the report says

Shrewsbury Town’s prolonged ownership dispute appears close to resolution after an American consortium received approval to buy the League Two club, according to BBC Sport Football. The club said it had now received written confirmation from both the Independent Football Regulator and the English Football League that the proposed takeover can proceed, although the buyers have not yet been named publicly.

In a statement, Shrewsbury said the remaining legal and administrative steps are now being completed before the deal is finalised. The club added that the new owner and principal investors will be announced when it is able to do so, and thanked supporters for their patience. BBC Sport reported that chairman Roland Wycherley remains committed to finishing the transaction smoothly.

The development follows a series of failed takeover attempts. Wycherley put the club up for sale in 2024, and earlier negotiations with an American bidder collapsed in March 2025, while another bid later fell through. Terms with an American consortium were first reported to have been agreed in June 2026, making Monday’s regulatory approval a key step toward completion.

If completed, the sale would end Wycherley’s 30-year tenure as owner. It also comes after a difficult period on the pitch, with Shrewsbury narrowly avoiding relegation to the National League last season following a late revival under manager Gavin Cowan.
