AMC stock surges after record revenue as CEO pushes back against 'prognosticators of doom' - Yahoo Finance
What the report says
Yahoo Finance reported that AMC Entertainment shares rose more than 20% on Monday after the movie theater operator announced a record second quarter, including $1.6 billion in revenue and its highest-ever adjusted EBITDA, a profitability measure often used to assess operating performance and cash generation. The report said CEO Adam Aron told investors on the company’s earnings call that the quarter stood out in AMC’s 106-year history.
According to Yahoo Finance, Aron also used the call to rebut skeptics of the company’s outlook, saying critics had underestimated AMC’s ability to work through years of pressure. The quarter was helped by strong film releases that drew audiences to cinemas, including “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” and “The Odyssey.” Yahoo said AMC’s domestic ticket revenue rose about 11.4%, while European attendance increased 18% from a year earlier.
The report placed the results in the context of AMC’s long recovery from pandemic-era disruptions, competition from streaming and volatility tied to its status as a closely followed meme stock. AMC has sought to defend the theater business through emphasis on the in-person moviegoing experience and flexible pricing, while also using share offerings to raise money and improve its balance sheet, a strategy that has diluted existing investors.
Yahoo Finance noted that AMC shares were up 49% for the year after Monday’s move, but remained down 99% over five years and far below their 2021 peak near $450. The surge matters because it shows renewed investor enthusiasm after a stronger box office quarter, even as the company’s longer-term financial and shareholder challenges remain central to its story.
