What the report says

Atletico Madrid have ruled out negotiating a sale of striker Julian Alvarez to Barcelona, escalating a dispute between the clubs over the Argentina international’s future. In a statement shared on social media, Atletico’s board said it unanimously backed the club’s position and would not discuss a transfer with the Spanish champions. The club also said it remains open to other transfer approaches if they are handled professionally and respectfully.

According to Al Jazeera’s report, Atletico had previously filed complaints with FIFA and the Spanish football federation over Barcelona’s pursuit of Alvarez. The club’s latest statement said it believes Alvarez will accept the decision and continue focusing on helping Atletico pursue its objectives. Alvarez, who missed training for a second day on Wednesday because of a reported illness, also came under pressure from some Atletico fans after the team’s 2-2 La Liga draw with Villarreal on Sunday.

The dispute comes as Barcelona look to strengthen their attack after the departures of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres. Al Jazeera reported that Barca president Joan Laporta had said the club still hoped to sign Alvarez before the transfer window closes, with an offer reported at about 100 million euros. Arsenal have also been mentioned as a possible suitor. Alvarez joined Atletico from Manchester City in 2024 in a deal that could rise to 95 million euros.
