MacRumors reports that Apple is preparing to launch a new smart home hub as early as October, citing Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The reported release window extends from October into early next year, indicating the timing is not yet pinned to a specific date. The device is described as a room-based product for spaces such as kitchens, living rooms and bedrooms, and Apple is said to expect some households may purchase multiple units.

According to the report, the hub would combine elements of a HomePod-style speaker with a roughly 7-inch display. It is expected to come in both tabletop and wall-mounted configurations. Siri AI is described as a central feature, and the device is said to use a new operating system derived from tvOS, with an interface that also draws on watchOS and iOS. Reported interface elements include app icons, widgets and customizable clock faces.

MacRumors says the hub may support facial recognition to tailor what appears on screen to the person viewing it. The interface could also adjust as a user moves closer to or farther from the device. Other reported functions include FaceTime calls, home security monitoring, HomeKit accessory controls, photo display, calendar access, music playback and an intercom feature for homes with multiple Apple devices.

The report matters because Apple has long offered pieces of a smart home ecosystem through HomePod, Apple TV and HomeKit, but it has not had a dedicated display-based home controller comparable to some rival products. MacRumors also notes that Apple is continuing work on a more advanced home security camera that could compete with Amazon’s Ring lineup.
