Alex Eala loses Asian Games semifinal to China’s Wang Xiyu

What the report says
Alexandra Eala of the Philippines was eliminated from the Asian Games women’s singles semifinal after a three-set loss to China’s Wang Xiyu at the Higashiyama Park Tennis Center in Nagoya. According to Al Jazeera’s report based on Reuters, Eala, the world No. 18 and top seed in the draw, started strongly but fell 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 to Wang, who is ranked 85th.
The defeat ended Eala’s bid for a first Asian Games gold medal and left her with another bronze, adding to the medals she had already collected at previous Games. The report said the 21-year-old chose to represent the Philippines rather than play at the concurrent China Open, a decision that could bring WTA penalties because the Beijing event is mandatory. Eala said after the match that she had no regrets and spoke positively about competing for her country.
Wang will face fellow Chinese player Zhang Shuai in the final. Al Jazeera noted that Zhang, a former major-quarterfinalist, defeated Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva to reach the title match.
The result matters beyond the medal race because Eala had also been aiming to strengthen her path toward qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics tennis tournament. More broadly, the match highlights the tension top players sometimes face between national-team events and tour commitments.
