Alex Eala firm on Asian Games participation despite threat of WTA fine

Filipino tennis player Alexandra Eala is moving ahead with plans to represent the Philippines at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, even though the event overlaps with the Women’s Tennis Association’s mandatory China Open in Beijing, Al Jazeera reported. Her national federation, the Philippine Tennis Association, said it has asked the WTA for an exemption from the conflicting tournament requirements, while also backing Eala’s choice to play for her country.

According to the report, missing a mandatory WTA 1000 event without approval can lead to ranking penalties and possible fines. Philippine Olympic Committee president Abraham Tolentino said Eala would still travel to Nagoya, while local lawmakers, including Senator Erwin Tulfo, were reported to have urged the government to help cover any fine the WTA might impose, with media reports citing a figure of $10,000.

The 21-year-old enters the Asian Games after a strong season that included her first WTA 1000 title and a third-round run at the US Open. She is set to play the Singapore Open before heading to Japan. Eala previously won bronze medals in women’s singles and mixed doubles at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou. The report also noted that tennis at the Asian Games can offer a path to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, subject to ranking requirements.
