What the report says

Albanian riot police used tear gas and water cannons on Tuesday to disperse hundreds of student demonstrators in Tirana, the capital, as clashes broke out near the Education Ministry. According to Al Jazeera’s report, protesters threw bricks, stones, firecrackers and Molotov cocktails during a rally that called for better education conditions and the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama.

Police said at least six officers and one female journalist were injured, and 23 people were arrested in the demonstrations. The ministry was targeted with objects hurled by some protesters, while officers urged the crowd to stop the attacks. Student organisers said the protest focused on university conditions, higher education costs, financial support and weak job prospects after graduation.

The rally also reflected wider frustration with inequality and government economic policy, with some participants saying they wanted a broader political change. In a separate statement, Deputy Prime Minister Albana Kociu condemned the violence and said destruction of public property and attacks on state institutions were not acceptable.

Al Jazeera added that Tirana has seen repeated anti-government protests since May, linked to anger over a luxury tourism project associated with the Trump family and allegations of corruption and lack of transparency. That broader context helps explain why the education protest became part of a larger wave of dissent.
