Akii-Bua Stadium construction reaches 85% ahead of January handover

What the report says
Construction of the Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium in Lira City is reported to be 85% complete, with the project moving into its final phase ahead of a planned handover in January 2027. The Independent Uganda, citing URN, said the 470 billion-shilling facility began in May 2025 under a 20-month contract and is intended to support Uganda’s preparations to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations with Kenya and Tanzania.
During a site visit by Parliament’s Committee on Industry, Trade and Tourism, project manager Eng. Mohammed Nazih of SAMCO National Construction Company said the main stadium structure is nearing completion and remaining work is focused on finishing key sections on schedule. The report also quoted Eng. Emre Erisik of Integral Group, which is handling the playing surfaces, as saying hybrid grass has been planted on the main pitch and training pitch, with maintenance ongoing to meet sporting standards.
The stadium is designed for 20,000 spectators and is being built in two zones. In addition to the main venue, the wider complex is to include an indoor arena, hotel, clubhouse, swimming pool, training pitches and outdoor courts. The project also covers parking, fencing, utilities, a sewage treatment plant and security systems. Local resident William Achol said the progress was encouraging after touring the site. Once finished, the stadium is expected to become a major sports venue for northern Uganda.
