AI platforms accelerating Uganda’s digital transformation

The Observer reports that artificial intelligence tools are becoming more visible in daily life and work across Uganda, from farming and education to business content creation and health services. The article says platforms from U.S.-based technology companies including Google, Microsoft, Meta, Amazon Web Services, OpenAI, Adobe and Anthropic are helping accelerate digital adoption as Uganda pursues a goal of creating one million AI-centred jobs and training three million people in AI skills by 2030.

Examples highlighted include students and teachers using online learning tools, small businesses improving visibility through digital platforms, and companies using automation to raise productivity and improve customer engagement.

In health, The Observer says AI-assisted diagnostic and monitoring systems are being used to support tuberculosis detection, disease surveillance, patient record management and supply planning. In agriculture, the article points to AI-powered applications that can help farmers track weather, pests and market prices. It also identifies business process outsourcing, data annotation, AI training, software development, cybersecurity, cloud computing and digital marketing as potential job-creating fields.

The article also notes concerns about Uganda becoming only a consumer of foreign technology. Experts quoted by The Observer call for local AI models, local-language datasets, stronger research institutions, startup financing and affordable internet access. The report says the Uganda Communications Commission has set up an AI Taskforce to work on ethics, data governance, transparency and risk management, while Uganda has not yet enacted a standalone AI law.
