Agago RDC Orders Arrest of Market Leaders over Shs200m Swindle

What the report says
Agago district authorities have ordered the arrest of three leaders of the Kalongo Market Vendors Association after members complained that more than Shs200 million in savings could not be explained. According to Nile Post, the action was directed by Agago District Resident District Commissioner James Nok Robinson Kidega after vendors raised concerns at his office about the status of their money and asked for accountability.
The association’s members reportedly say the group should have over Shs200 million in its accounts, but that only about Shs1 million may remain. They also allege that they have been denied access to financial records and blocked from holding an annual general meeting to review accounts and elect new leaders. The case is now under investigation, with police and district audit officials expected to examine deposits, withdrawals, loans and other transactions.
Nile Post reported that the three arrested leaders are the first of several officials expected to be questioned, with more than 10 others potentially facing scrutiny as the probe continues. Statements are being taken from members, and the association’s bank accounts are expected to be audited. The leaders have not been convicted, and the allegations remain unproven.
The matter highlights wider concerns about financial accountability in community savings groups, which can be important sources of credit and business capital for low-income traders. The RDC said any funds found to have been stolen should be recovered and returned to members.
