Aga Khan to promote green energy products in Uganda

What the report says
The Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) says it plans to expand into green hydrogen-related products in Uganda as part of an environmental preservation effort, according to Watchdog Uganda. The update was shared by Amin Mawji OBE, AKDN’s diplomatic representative in Uganda, during a courtesy visit to Speaker Jacob Marksons Oboth on Thursday, 15 October 2026.
Watchdog Uganda reported that Mawji linked the planned venture to efforts to support Ugandan farmers and reduce reliance on imported inputs. He also said AKDN is in talks with the Ministries of Energy and Finance about possible support. The article did not provide a timeline for the project or further technical details.
The report also says AKDN is investing in other sectors in Uganda, including two pharmaceutical facilities under construction in Namanve Industrial Park and the Aga Khan University Hospital in Nakawa, which is expected to include a teaching hospital. Speaker Oboth praised the network’s work in education, health and energy, and pointed to its long-standing footprint in Uganda. As reported by Watchdog Uganda, that history includes education institutions, pharmaceutical investments, the Bujagali power project and Air Uganda. In general, green hydrogen refers to hydrogen produced using renewable energy, though the article itself focuses on AKDN’s broader development plans rather than explaining the technology in detail.
