Al Jazeera reported that Iran has accused Ukraine of attacking an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea on Saturday, killing one sailor and injuring another. Tehran summoned Ukraine’s charge d’affaires and described the strike as a “hostile and criminal” act, while Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi called for a response from the UN Security Council, the European Union and other international actors.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on X that Ukraine had carried out long-range strikes in the Caspian Sea against vessels linked to military cargo involving Iran and a Russian warship, though he did not name the Iranian vessel. He also accused Russia of supplying Iran with satellite intelligence for use in its military operations in the Middle East, saying Kyiv would share relevant information with partners.

The incident highlights the widening overlap between the Russia-Ukraine war and conflicts involving Iran. Relations between Tehran and Kyiv have been strained since Iran began supplying Shahed drones to Russia after Moscow’s full-scale invasion in 2022. Al Jazeera noted that Ukraine says Russia has used large numbers of Iranian-designed drones against Ukrainian cities, while Kyiv has offered antidrone support to several Gulf states.

The strike is significant because the Caspian Sea has been viewed as a comparatively secure route for Iranian trade and logistics, while Iran is already under pressure around the Strait of Hormuz and amid Red Sea disruptions linked to the Houthis. Al Jazeera said Iran has not announced retaliation, as regional mediators seek to prevent further escalation involving Iran, the United States and other actors.
