After 5,000m gold, Cherop bags bronze in 3,000m

Ugandan distance runner Charity Cherop added another medal at the 2026 World Athletics Under-20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon, winning bronze in the women’s 3,000m. According to The Observer, the result came days after she took gold in the 5,000m, underscoring a strong showing for Uganda at the meet.

Cherop finished in 8:45.59 in a race that was controlled by Ethiopian runners down the stretch. Ethiopia’s Yordanos Tsigab won in 8:43.65, with teammate Shito Gumi taking silver in 8:45.06. Cherop remained with the leading group before being outkicked in the final stages, but still held on for third place and another podium finish.

The medal adds to Cherop’s growing record in youth and under-20 competition. The Observer noted that she had previously won silver in the women’s 5,000m at the 2024 World Athletics Under-20 Championships in Lima, Peru, before later taking gold in the same event at the 2025 African U20 Championships in Abeokuta, Nigeria.

Cherop and her coach, Immaculate Chemutai, both framed the bronze as evidence of progress and preparation. The result matters because it shows Cherop can compete consistently across distance events on the international stage, while also strengthening Uganda’s presence in middle- and long-distance running, an area where East African athletes have traditionally been strong.
