Afrigo Band to Honour Existing Bookings Despite Death of Founder Moses Matovu

Afrigo Band has said it will keep fulfilling existing engagements after the death of its founder and longtime bandleader, Moses Matovu. In a statement released on September 28, the Kampala-based group told clients, corporate partners, fans and the wider public that bookings would go ahead and that the band remained committed to the performance standards associated with its name.

Matovu, widely known as “Papa Moi,” died on September 24, 2026, after more than five decades of influence in Uganda’s music scene through Afrigo Band. According to Watchdog Uganda, the statement was signed by Executive Director James Wasula and sought to reassure supporters that the band’s structure and values would continue despite the loss of its founder.

The band said Matovu had left behind a strong foundation built on discipline, talent and long service, and that Afrigo would continue in his honor. It also thanked the Government, Uganda Police Force, fellow musicians and members of the public for support to the family and the group during the mourning period.

Afrigo Band is regarded as one of Uganda’s longest-running and best-known live music institutions, so the announcement is significant for event organizers and fans watching how the group will carry forward after a major leadership loss.
