Researchers writing in The Conversation Africa, republished by AllAfrica, say tsetse flies remain a major reason some parasitic diseases persist across much of sub-Saharan Africa. The article says the insects transmit human African trypanosomiasis, or sleeping sickness, as well as animal trypanosomosis, which harms cattle and other livestock and can undermine rural livelihoods in 37 countries.

The piece notes that public-health efforts have driven sleeping sickness to historically low levels, but animal disease continues to cause weight loss, anaemia, lower fertility, deaths and broader economic losses. It also explains that tsetse flies feed on a wide range of hosts, including humans and many wild and domestic animals, allowing parasites to move between wildlife, livestock and people.

The authors, Markus Engstler and Daniel Masiga, describe laboratory and field research carried out with international partners in Germany, Kenya and elsewhere to understand how the insects pierce very different skins. Their work found that tsetse flies do not rely on one special structure; instead, tiny teeth on the mouthparts, backward pulling motions and flexible feeding behavior work together. The study suggests the insect acts more like a microscopic saw than a syringe, especially when feeding on tougher skin such as reptile scales.

The article says this insight may not yet offer a new control tool, but it could help explain why tsetse flies are such effective disease vectors and may inform future approaches that disrupt feeding or improve control methods.
