What the report says

The African Development Bank Group says it will host a high-level side event during the African Food Systems Forum in Kigali, Rwanda, to discuss lessons from the African Emergency Food Production Facility (AEFPF). The session is scheduled for 2 September 2026 at the Kigali Conference Centre and is intended to look at how emergency responses can be turned into longer-term food system resilience.

According to the bank’s announcement carried by AllAfrica, the meeting will bring together ministers, development partners, research institutions and private-sector participants. The discussions are expected to focus on how experience from the AEFPF can inform the next generation of agricultural investment in Africa and help countries prepare for future shocks to food supplies.

The AEFPF was launched as a $1.5 billion continental initiative after disruptions linked to geopolitical conflict reduced cereal supplies from the Black Sea region. The bank says the program has supported 35 African countries through measures such as improved seed systems, fertilizer access, technology dissemination, policy reforms, digital innovation and strategic partnerships.

The announcement says the facility has exceeded several of its original targets, including producing more than 45 million tons of food, distributing large quantities of certified seed and fertilizer, and reaching more than 15 million farmers. The event is meant to share practical lessons and recommendations for strengthening Africa’s food security and reducing reliance on volatile global supply chains.
