What the report says

AllAfrica, carrying a Southern African Development Community (SADC) press release, reported that the bloc plans to hold its 46th Ordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government on 17 August 2026 at the Durban International Conference Centre in Durban, South Africa. South African President Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to host and chair the meeting.

According to the SADC announcement, the summit theme will focus on resilient, sustainable and inclusive industrialisation through infrastructure development, agriculture and critical minerals transformation. The bloc said the agenda is intended to support a more competitive, climate-resilient and socially inclusive regional economy, while advancing what it described as a just and prosperous future for SADC citizens.

The meeting is expected to review the state of the region, including economic trends and socio-economic and political performance, in relation to the Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan 2020-2030 and Vision 2050. Leaders are also due to assess implementation of earlier summit decisions, including outcomes from the 45th summit in Madagascar in August 2025, and discuss the SADC Regional Development Fund, food and nutrition security, disaster preparedness, the SADC Humanitarian and Emergency Operations Centre, and the regional effects of global geopolitical developments.

Several preparatory and related events are scheduled before the leaders’ summit, including SADC Industrialisation Week from 27 to 31 July 2026, meetings of senior officials, finance and ministerial sessions, a public lecture at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, and Organ Troika meetings on politics, defence and security. SADC is a 16-member regional organisation whose stated mission includes economic integration, development, governance, peace and security.
