The Independent Uganda, carrying a Bird Agency special report dated July 30, 2026, reports that African electric vehicle developers are experimenting with vehicle-integrated photovoltaics — solar panels built into roofs or bodywork — to support batteries, run auxiliary systems and add limited driving range. The approach is being explored as charging networks remain uneven in parts of the continent and as manufacturers look to make use of Africa’s strong solar resource.

The report highlights Tunisia’s Bako Motors as an early commercial example. Founder and CEO Boubaker Siala said demand for zero-emission vehicles and ESG-focused fleet choices is opening business opportunities. Bako’s compact Bee uses rooftop solar alongside lithium iron phosphate batteries and has reportedly made an export delivery to Italy. The company is also developing the B-Van for last-mile logistics, with solar support for systems such as refrigeration, lighting and air conditioning, and is scaling production at a factory in Kalâat El Andalous.

The article also cites other efforts, including Uganda’s Kiira Motors’ Kayoola Solar Bus, Kenya’s Solar-e-Cycles Uhuru electric tricycle, and Tshwane University of Technology’s SunChaser Solar Car Project in South Africa. Chinese firm Solarky Mobility Technologies is preparing to enter South Africa with its solar-assisted sunV, according to the report.

The Independent notes that the technology remains debated. Because vehicle roofs offer limited space, onboard panels are not expected to replace plug-in charging. Researchers cited from ETH Zurich and the Paul Scherrer Institute found that off-grid solar charging could become economically competitive in many African locations before 2040, suggesting solar may become an advantage for electric mobility when used alongside batteries and charging infrastructure.
