Africa prepares for historic Olympic moment at Dakar 2026

BBC Sport Africa reports that Dakar 2026 is being billed as a landmark for the Olympic movement, with Senegal’s capital set to become the first African city to stage an event carrying the Olympic rings. The Youth Olympic Games are scheduled to open on 31 October, 100 days from the BBC report, after Dakar was selected in 2018 and the event was moved from 2022 to 2026 following the Covid-19 pandemic and to allow more sustainable preparation.

The Games will use venues in Dakar as well as Diamniadio and Saly. Christophe Dubi of the International Olympic Committee described the moment as highly significant for the continent, while Thierno Cisse of the local organising committee told the BBC that Senegal sees itself as representing Africa during the event. Organisers have named public figures including Senegal football captain Kalidou Koulibaly, Khaby Lame and Omar Sy as ambassadors.

BBC Sport Africa says the competition is expected to involve about 2,700 athletes across 25 sports, alongside 10 non-competitive engagement sports intended to encourage local participation. The IOC has also launched training for more than 400 young Africans in Games-related roles, and Dakar 2026 will feature a youth refugee team, with athletes identified through programmes and trials in East Africa.

The report notes hopes that the event will create opportunities for young people in a country facing high youth unemployment and pressures linked to irregular migration. It also highlights questions about cost, citing reported stadium and organising expenses that the BBC said were not confirmed by the IOC or local organisers.
