Africa: How Africa Can Capture More Value From Its Cotton

What the report says
As World Cotton Day approaches on 7 October, an AllAfrica-published Bird Story Agency column argues that Africa could capture far more economic value from cotton by moving beyond raw fibre exports and building a stronger end-to-end value chain. The piece, written by Erica Vogel of Cotton SA, says the sector can better support agricultural development, jobs and growth if countries invest not only in farms and ginneries but also in spinning, textile production and garment making.
The article uses South Africa as a practical example. It highlights farmer development, technical training and sustainable production as foundations for better yields and higher-quality fibre. A profile of cotton farmer Frans Malela is used to illustrate how improved agronomic practices, mentorship and knowledge-sharing can raise productivity while creating seasonal employment in farming communities.
The column also stresses that sustainability and fibre quality are closely linked, pointing to Cotton SA’s South African Cotton Standard as a way to make responsible production measurable through management, environmental, labour and economic criteria. The standard is being tested in a three-year pilot under South African conditions. In broader context, the article says similar approaches could help African producers retain more value locally by strengthening links between growers, processors, manufacturers and consumers.
The piece notes that the processing gap is especially large in West and Central Africa, where the World Trade Organization reported in March 2026 that most cotton is still exported as raw fibre. The article frames regional investment, cooperation and supply-chain coordination as key to keeping more of cotton’s value within Africa.
