Africa: Five African Countries End Polio Outbreaks

What the report says
The World Health Organization’s Africa office said five countries in the region have stopped the spread of polio after separate technical reviews confirmed that transmission was interrupted. The countries named in the assessment are Burundi, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, the Republic of Congo and Uganda. WHO-AFRO said the closures mark a significant step in regional efforts to protect children and move closer to eradication.
According to the article, Independent Outbreak Response Assessment teams reviewed surveillance, laboratory and epidemiological evidence between January and June 2026 before concluding that the poliovirus type 2 outbreaks had ended. WHO said the decisions were based on factors including outbreak response quality, population immunity, surveillance performance and vaccination campaign results. The report describes the work as the product of national leadership, health workers, communities and external partners.
WHO officials also stressed that the milestone does not eliminate risk. The agency warned that poliovirus can still be reintroduced and pointed to a recent detection in Madagascar as a reminder that vigilance remains necessary. The article says countries across the region have been strengthening surveillance, laboratory systems, community engagement and targeted immunization efforts to help detect outbreaks faster and protect children, including in hard-to-reach areas.
The broader significance is that outbreak closures can also strengthen health systems beyond polio, improving readiness for other vaccine-preventable diseases. The piece attributes support for the regional effort to partners including Gavi, UNICEF, Rotary, and donors such as Canada, Germany, the Gates Foundation, the European Investment Bank and the UAE.
