“Africa Does Not Lack Curriculum — It Lacks Alignment” — Scholars Challenge Uganda to Rethink the Future of Education

What the report says
At the International Conference on Curriculum Development in Kampala, scholars and policy experts argued that Uganda’s education system needs stronger alignment with the realities of today’s economy and classroom technology. The meeting, held at Speke Resort Munyonyo and organized by the National Curriculum Development Centre, brought together nearly 400 delegates under the theme of updating curriculum for a globalized world.
According to Watchdog Uganda, keynote speaker Prof. Benson Banda said Africa’s main challenge is not a shortage of curricula, but a mismatch between what is taught and what learners need. He and other speakers said education should place greater emphasis on critical thinking, practical competence, indigenous knowledge, and communication, rather than focusing mainly on memorization and examinations.
The article also highlighted the growing role of artificial intelligence and digital tools in learning. Dr. Tony Devine of the Global Peace Foundation said educators must adapt to a world where information is easily available, while Dr. Hamis Mugendawala stressed that teacher training will be essential if reform is to work in practice. Dr. Grace Baguma of NCDC framed curriculum change as a matter of national development, linking it to Uganda’s need for a flexible, skilled workforce.
The conference’s overall message was that education reform is not only a classroom issue but also an economic one, since Uganda’s industrial and technological ambitions depend on graduates who can innovate, solve problems, and adapt to change.
